Planning a Wi-Fi Deployment: What to Consider Before You Start
Good Wi-Fi starts with good planning. From understanding how a space will be used to surveys, cabling, channel planning and validation, getting the foundations right can prevent problems further down the line.
Why Planning Matters
Many Wi-Fi problems can be traced back to decisions made — or not made — before the first cable is pulled. Whether you're covering a single office or a multi-building site, the fundamentals are the same: understand the environment, design around how the network will actually be used, and validate the finished deployment.
Start With the Right Survey
A good Wi-Fi design starts with understanding the environment.
Predictive surveys use floor plans and specialist modelling software to design access point placement and model expected coverage, capacity and signal behaviour across a site.
Where required, an on-site survey adds real-world information that can't always be captured from plans alone. Building materials, neighbouring networks, sources of interference and the way a space is actually used can all influence wireless performance.
The right approach depends on the environment and the requirement. For some sites, a predictive design may provide everything needed to plan the deployment. More complex or challenging environments may benefit from additional on-site surveying and verification.
Understand the Use Case
Not all Wi-Fi deployments are equal. A warehouse supporting handheld scanners has very different requirements from a conference centre handling hundreds of users, voice calls and video conferencing.
Some of the questions worth answering early include:
- How many devices are likely to connect?
- What applications will they be running?
- Where will the highest concentrations of users be?
- Are there areas requiring seamless roaming?
- Will IoT or specialist devices be connecting to the network?
- How might those requirements change in the future?
The answers help determine access point selection, placement, capacity and the wider network configuration.
Channel Planning & Interference
Good Wi-Fi isn't simply about achieving a strong signal.
Channel utilisation, interference, neighbouring networks and the number of devices competing for airtime can all affect performance.
The 2.4 GHz band has limited usable channel capacity, while 5 GHz and 6 GHz provide significantly more spectrum to work with. Modern Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 solutions can also make use of 6 GHz where supported, providing additional capacity for compatible devices.
Effective channel planning is therefore an important part of designing a network for coverage, capacity and reliable performance.
Cabling & Power
Access points typically need both a data connection and power. Power over Ethernet (PoE) simplifies installation by providing both over the structured cabling infrastructure, but the switching and cabling still need to support the requirements of the chosen access points.
Power budgets, available switch capacity, data throughput, cable routes, containment and access to ceiling voids should all be considered during the design stage.
Planning these elements early can prevent a well-designed wireless network being limited by the infrastructure supporting it.
Validation & Handover
Installation shouldn't be the end of the process.
A post-installation validation survey measures the finished network against the original design and helps confirm that coverage and performance are being delivered where they're required.
It can also identify areas requiring optimisation and provides a useful baseline for future troubleshooting, moves or changes.
Good documentation matters too. As-built drawings, access point locations, survey results and other relevant project information give the customer a clear record of what has been installed and make future changes much easier to manage.
Ultimately, a successful Wi-Fi deployment isn't about installing as many access points as possible. It's about designing the right network for the environment, installing it properly and proving that it performs as intended.
